A state highway near the Wisconsin-Michigan state line is closed due to concerns of a growing sink hole.

Dispatchers received word of the sink hole on Wisconsin Highway 17 around 5:30 p.m. Monday, according to the Vilas County Sheriff's Office.

The hole started forming near the intersection of Grosser Lane, north of the town of Phelps. Crews from the Vilas County Highway Department believe rusted out culverts caused the ground to collapse under the roadway.

Since the road has been deemed unsafe, a posted detour re-directs traffic via County Road A and State Highway 55. There's no estimate on how soon the highway could reopen, but crews are working on the issue, according to the sheriff's office.
