Wausau East will not offer varsity football this season
WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) -Wausau East’s varsity football season has officially been cancelled due to low turnout numbers. The news was first reported by Wissports and confirmed by NewsChannel 7.
A release from the Wausau School District says in part: “Wausau East’s High School’s football program is going to look a little different this fall. Because only a small number of student athletes have committed to the sport, there will not be a traditional varsity football team for this year only.”
The release says that in light of the cancellation, a small senior team will be put together than can play both 8-man and varsity reserve games “to the greatest extent possible.” Varsity reserve is essentially JV with seniors playing in the game.
All coaches on the team will retain their jobs.
The Lumberjacks went 0-2 last season, as COVID cancellations affected the rest of their schedule.
