Spencer “rock star” wins veterans youth service award
WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - Brookelynn Yunk is receiving first place for the Disabled Americans Veterans Youth Volunteer award for her work with local veterans.
Brookelynn decorates rocks to give them to veterans, honoring the branch of the military they served in, or another aspect of their service.
Brookelynn was given the award in Green Bay, the lights were not too bright for the Spencer native.
“She was a rock star. I know her badge says ‘Rock Princess’ but she was a rock star,” State Junior Vice Commander for the Disabled Americans Veterans John Willman said.
Brookelynn might be the award winner, but her dad has enough excitement for the whole family.
“I’ve been walking around telling everyone in the family. Showing all of our veterans friends, showing them the certificate. I think she’s more humble about it,” Brookelynn’s dad Jeff Yunk said.
The awards and certificates are always welcome, but Brookelynn makes it very clear that’s not what she’s out for.
“She told me ‘Dad I don’t want to be famous, I don’t want to be on T.V. I just do this for the veterans.’ I’m very proud of her,” Jeff said.
The fame has made Brookelynn sought after. Jeff says this summer will be busy filling orders. The Yunk’s already have the Wausau Fire Department and Police Department putting in requests.
“Trying to get as many done as we can. We probably got 15 done last week. I know we have another 50 to 75 orders to come through,” Jeff said.
Painting rocks won’t be the only thing on the itinerary this summer. Attending local events like “Veteran’s cup of Coffee” is something that Brookelynn and the veterans are excited for.
“We appreciate it a lot. She brings a spark better than Geritol,” Willman said.
Brookelynn is also having heart surgery this summer to treat Supraventricular Tachycardia. The surgery is scheduled for July.
