EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -An Eau Claire Police officer is talking about an incident over the weekend where he’s being credited with helping to save a life.

Early Sunday morning, Officer Zac Becker was working on a case in Phoenix Park when he was approached by someone saying his girlfriend was missing and said she was last seen walking under the Haymarket Landing Footbridge.

The next thing he knew, there was a splash under the bridge.

Becker said when he saw the girlfriend was floating in the water he knew exactly what to do.

“Initially I just assumed someone was just down there and jumped in and they were swimming around themselves. When I saw her, that she was unconscious, I was definitely concerned for her safety. It is kind of one of those things where you just react and try and help somebody, that’s what I would want somebody to do for my sister or someone in my family.”

Officer Becker has been with the Eau Claire Police Department for three years.
